International Travel Medical Insurance for Seniors

International Travel Medical Insurance for Seniors

Many seniors assume their domestic health insurance or Medicare will cover them while traveling overseas. Unfortunately, most U.S. health plans provide little or no coverage outside the United States. International travel medical insurance helps seniors stay protected from unexpected medical expenses while traveling abroad.

Why Seniors need International travel insurance

A good International Travel Medical plan provides short-term coverage for medical emergencies, hospital care, and evacuation while traveling outside your home country. These plans are designed to protect you from unexpected medical costs and help you access quality healthcare abroad. In addition, many countries now require travelers to have international medical insurance as a condition for entry, especially in the Schengen Area and countries like Australia, Argentina, Cuba, and Thailand. This trend continues to grow due to the need to protect public healthcare systems and manage costs associated with treating uninsured visitors.

Single Trip International Medical plans were designed to cover those who are traveling outside the United States for a short periods of time. This would include trips for vacations, education, business, short visits to your favorite place abroad, just about any reason you travel abroad and want coverage for unexpected health and safety issues that could arise. For those seeking to travel for longer than 6 months you will need to consider a different product designed specifically for the long term stay. BCBS Global offers their Global Worldwide Premier Plan for Expats as does Cigna Global.

Single Trip vs Other Travel Medical Options

Understanding the difference between travel medical plans can help you choose the best coverage:

  • Single Trip vs Multi-Trip: This plan covers one international journey up to ~182 days, while annual multi-trip plans cover multiple travels over a year with specific limitations of not to exceed days per trip.
  • Travel Medical vs Expat Health Insurance: Travel medical plans are for temporary trips (short-term); while expat plans are for living/staying outside your home country for 6 months or longer.
  • Basic vs Enhanced Benefits: Some plans offer limited emergency coverage, while the Platinum Single Trip plan includes broader services and higher coverage limits.

Travel Insurance for Seniors Over 70, 75, and 80

When you reach age 65 and beyond there can be limitations from company to company. Generally, once you reach age 65 you are eligible for Medicare. Most seniors will elect to enroll in a Medicare Supplement. With few exceptions your Medicare Supplement may be severely limited for certain type of medical events while outside the United States. (See the FAQ section below) Again, it is important to note that Medicare does not follow you outside the United States and will not cover any medical expenses you encurr while traveling abroad.

Eligibility, Age Limits & Coverage Duration - Plans like the Platinum Single Trip Travel Medical plan are typically purchased before international travel begins. In some cases, coverage may be available for travelers who have already departed, subject to plan rules and waiting periods. Coverage start dates and eligibility requirements vary, so purchasing early is recommended.

Purchase timing: Although it is not necessary to enroll in your international travel medical plan far in advance, you must make sure that you have purchased coverage and it is in place prior to your departure date. It is smart to make sure you have ample time to make sure your information is correct on your travel documents and if any changes to your policy prior to departure is necessary you have time to get it done.

  • Are there any age limits? Companies like BCBS Global offer plans up to age 95
  • Single Trip Only
  • Short-term duration - up to 182 Days
  • Can I buy this after departure? Single Trip plans must be purchased prior to your departure date
  • Plan cannot be purchased after leaving on your trip
  • When does the coverage start? Coverage begins based on approved Departure Date

Helpful FAQ's for Seniors

Does Medicare Cover You Overseas?

Medicare generally does not cover healthcare services for seniors traveling outside the United States, with very limited exceptions for emergencies. It is advisable to consider purchasing travel insurance for additional coverage while abroad.

Do Medicare Supplement policies provide coverage while traveling outside the U.S?

Original Medicare does not cover you when traveling outside the U.S.. If you have a Medicare Supplement there is limited international coverage that will come from Medicare Supplement Plans F, G and N.

These Plans; F, G and N provides emergency care services beginning the first 60 days of each trip outside the U.S.

  • $50,000 lifetime maximum benefit.
  • $250 annual deductible
  • 80% coverage up to the $50,000 benefit.

I have Medicare and a supplement plan (F, G, or N) so how does it work?

The way this works is; when abroad if you become ill or injured, and it is considered an emergency or urgently needed care, go to the nearest medical facility that can properly care for you.  You will need to pay for the care received at the time of service, with cash or credit card.  International doctors, clinics or hospitals will not accept your Medicare Supplement card as payment.

Keep the itemized medical bill, and when you return to the states, send the medical bill to your medicare supplement carrier, and after they review the claim, and agree the medical services were necessary and considered an emergency or urgently needed, then your out of pocket cost will be reimbursed, minus the $250 deductible and 20% of the claim, up to a maximum of $50,000.

If you need care abroad, it is up to you to find the appropriate medical facility, your domestic carrier (Medicare Supplement company) will not be able to help you through your situation.  They are simply not equipped to help advise you, where to go, how to navigate the current country’s medical system, or how to organize your ground or air medical transport.

Do I need an International Travel Medical Insurance plan?

A travel insurance company is unique in that they are accessible 24/7  to help with your situation.  Also, they have translators who can speak to medical professionals, along with providing emergency medical evacuation coverage to assist you if an emergency strikes.

Most travel insurance policies are considered short-term, a few days up to 6 month.  There is no medical review and the policy is very comprehensive, with high coverage limits and a wide range of deductible options.  When I travel outside the U.S., this is the policy I buy for  myself and family.
